There
are numerous ways to move your belongings to your new home. Some people
opt to use a full service
moving company where movers load up your belongings and
transport them to your new home. Others may prefer to move themselves
where they do all of the organizing, packing, loading (and heavy
lifting) and transporting of their items to their new place. Here’s how
to make the most out of your independent move: |
|
Pack it Up:
Packing
can be harder than the actual move itself, mainly because it is very
time consuming and requires a lot of organization. Locate strong
boxes and devise a system of what you are going to keep,
throw away or donate. Generally, you have a good sense of this
(clothing that has been collecting dust in your closest are good toss
items) and create a packing system, as you go from room-to-room. Items
to donate or toss can also be given to friends during a packing party.
They can go through what you don’t want and take the items home. This
can also be a clever way for them to assist you with packing. Once you
know what to keep, pack everything in your boxes and label them, so
that you know where everything goes in your new home. |

Locate a Van:
You
can either use a
rental truck such as the You Load We Haul option or a self
service moving option such as with a U-Haul van or truck.
With the You Load We Haul option, a van or truck will arrive at your
old home. You then do all of the heavy lifting and loading into the
truck. When you are done, a driver takes your items to your new home.
This option may be ideal if you need to drive your own car to your new
home. The U-Haul option (or another carrier) involves the rental of
truck or van, but you do both the driving and lifting. This is a very
independent approach to moving and generally pretty affordable with a
rate based on mileage. |

Loading
101:
Now that you are packed and ready to go, it’s
time to load up your boxes and furniture. Since you don’t have the skills of a
professional moving company, this
will probably be the first time that you have loaded up a van. Hopefully, your friends and family aren’t too far
beyond you for an extra hand, which is crucial for super heavy items.

Equipment:
Depending on
your items, you may need a dolly (or two) to assist you with
transporting boxes and furniture from your place to the van. As you
load, make sure that one person is in the van while others bring items
to pack. The person who stays outside will organize the items so that
they are packed in properly, carefully working from floor with all
spaces filled. Also, heavy and bulk items like a sofa should be placed
in the van first. Blankets, bags, clothing and miscellaneous items can
be used to fill in exposed spaces. |
